Additionally, the charging case is undergoing a transformation; Samsung is moving away from the vertical design of the Buds 3 and returning to a horizontal layout, similar to that of the Buds 2 Pro, but now with a transparent lid. While the design of the Buds 4 isn’t surprising, the battery situation is where things get interesting. We now have the battery capacities for the Buds 4, Buds 4 Pro, and their cases, sourced directly from internal coding in the One UI 8.5 beta.

The breakdown is as follows: the base Buds 4 will feature a 42 mAh battery, while the Buds 4 Pro will have a 57 mAh battery. The good news is that the Buds 4 Pro sees a 4 mAh improvement over its predecessor. However, the concerning issue is that the regular Buds 4 are losing 6 mAh compared to the Buds 3. This situation worsens when considering the Buds 2, which has a 61 mAh battery.

Consequently, the Buds 4 are down about 13 percent in capacity compared to the Buds 3 and a striking 31 percent compared to the Buds 2. Why would Samsung make this decision? Honestly, I’m at a loss. I’ve stopped assuming that this organization consistently makes sound choices. The only explanation that seems plausible is a focus on efficiency. The Buds 3 have shown that Samsung can reduce battery size while still maintaining similar battery life, thanks to a more efficient chipset. Perhaps Samsung thought, “Why not reduce it further and keep battery life the same?”



If that’s the case, cool. But also… why not offer users the benefit instead of decreasing capacity again? That’s the part that’s frustrating. At least the Buds 4 Pro go the opposite direction. Bigger battery; consequently, battery life should improve there. As for the cases, the Buds 4 Pro case receives a 15 mAh increase. Nothing exceptional, but at least it’s not a downgrade. We still don’t know the case capacity for the regular Buds 4. Moving on, Samsung removed a very irritating limitation from the Buds 3. The Buds 4 lineup gets



a bodily gesture to engage Interpreter mode. Just pinch and hold the stems on both earbuds. With the Buds 3, you had to reach out your phone and manually start Interpreter first. On the Buds 4, you just execute the gesture, and it’s on. Way more convenient. Your phone still needs to be connected, though. No magic here. Interestingly, AirPods Pro employ a very similar mechanism for Live Translation. Call it copying, call it inspiration. If it makes the feature faster and easier to use, that’s a win.

So what else is the Buds 4 lineup bringing to the table? Well, they’re getting head gestures. You may nod or shake your head to manage calls, notifications, alarms, and timers and even say yes or no to the phone’s AI assistant. Other earphones do this, but in a very constrained form. Samsung’s version appears a lot more adaptable and actually helpful. There’s also a new button on the charging case adjacent to the USB-C connector.     Finally! I’m so glad they’re moving away from that sharp, angular design on the stems. I loved the sound of the 3 Pros, but they felt a bit ‘poke-y’ after an hour of use. If the 4 Pros go back to a smoother shape while keeping the same audio quality, I’m definitely upgrading.
