Samsung’s next-gen Tri-Fold promises sleek design and bold innovation.
Samsung already made a phone that unfolds into a real 10-inch tablet… and it’s already sold out with zero restocks?
So here’s the deal. Samsung’s first double-folding phone, the Galaxy Z TriFold, was produced in limited numbers; it vanished fast, and Samsung has confirmed there won’t be any more units coming. But now, a new rumor says Samsung isn’t done. A second-generation TriFold is reportedly in development, and it could be thinner, lighter, and actually closer to something normal people might carry.
This is rumor territory, but the details are interesting, and the timing is kind of surprising.
First, quick refresher on why the TriFold mattered in the first place.
Most foldables open from a phone into a squarish screen. That sounds cool until you try to watch a video and you get those chunky black borders on the sides because the aspect ratio just isn’t made for it. It’s fine for multitasking, reading, and apps… but for media, it’s not always the best fit.
The TriFold took a different approach. Instead of one fold, it used two hinges, so it could open out into a full-sized tablet. We’re talking around a 10-inch display with a more traditional tablet-like shape, roughly that 4:3 vibe people are used to on iPads and other tablets.
And when it was open, it actually looked impressively slim and light for what it was. The problem was when you folded it down. Then it turned into this thick, chunky brick in your pocket. Cool engineering, questionable pocketability.
That’s part of why a lot of people assumed it was a one-time experiment. A “we can do it” device, not a “we’re doing this every year now” device.
But here’s where the new rumor kicks in.
A known leaker, yeux1122, claims Samsung is working on a second-generation TriFold, and the big focus is a new hinge design aimed at ultra-slim and lightweight hardware. And the hinge part matters because in foldables, the hinge is basically everything. It affects thickness, durability, how flat the screen sits, and whether the whole thing feels premium or flimsy.
The report also suggests this hinge tech could later trickle down into other foldables. So even if you don’t care about a TriFold specifically, this could be Samsung testing the next leap for the whole lineup.
And the thickness problem is real. Android Authority pointed out how huge the gap is between Samsung’s recent Fold progress and the TriFold’s bulk.
They referenced the Galaxy Z Fold 7 hitting around 8.9 millimeters when folded and weighing about 215 grams. That’s getting close to “okay, I can live with this” territory.
Meanwhile, the original TriFold was on another planet: about 12.9 millimeters thick when folded and roughly 309 grams. That’s heavy. And yes, it has a bigger display and two hinges, so it’s not a fair one-to-one comparison, but it makes the point: if tri-folds ever go mainstream, Samsung has to shave down weight and thickness. And the fastest way to do that is hinge engineering.
Now, the other big piece of the story is the brutal reality check: Samsung told Bloomberg there will be no restocks. Sales even halted in Korea, and once the remaining US stock is gone, that’s it. It’s now basically living in “sold out” status, like a collector device.

And that changes the vibe of the TriFold. It goes from “this is the future” to “this was a test run.” An engineering flex. Something that hints at where things could go… but doesn’t really solve the foldable problem today, especially at a price like $2,899.
So why would Samsung come back with a TriFold 2 when the first one is basically an expensive curiosity?
That’s where it gets messy, because there are also reports that Samsung is tightening spending across departments. Component costs are rising, and a lot of that is being blamed on the wider tech world’s hunger for AI infrastructure. If chips, displays, and advanced parts are getting more expensive, the idea of mass-producing a dual-hinge 10-inch foldable gets harder to justify.
There are even reports out of Korea suggesting internal austerity measures, including cost-cutting in Samsung’s device experience division, the group that covers smartphones, TVs, and appliances. The rumors get so specific they even claim executives have been restricted from flying business class.
So if Samsung is cutting costs, why develop something as complex as a TriFold 2?
Two possible answers.
One: because Samsung’s under pressure from rivals, especially Chinese brands that are moving fast on hardware and pricing. Samsung doesn’t just want to sell phones; it wants to stay the brand people associate with foldables. Being first matters.
Two: because a second-generation TriFold doesn’t have to be a mass-market product. It could be a “halo” device. A limited, premium model that shows off new hinge tech and keeps Samsung’s foldable reputation on top.
And while we’re here, there’s another Samsung display rumor floating around: a slidable OLED device. Supposedly it would use Samsung Display’s Slidable Flex tech, but the first version would be manual, not motorized. The interesting part is the claim that it could extend to around a 7-inch display, and it might be thinner than the prototypes Samsung showed at CES and MWC. If it becomes a real product, the timing being thrown around is late 2027 or early 2028.
So Samsung might be experimenting in two directions at once: fold twice, or slide out.
Either way, the message is the same: they’re still trying to solve the “big screen in your pocket” problem, even if the first TriFold didn’t feel ready for real life.
If you want, I can do a follow-up comparing tri-folds versus rollables and which one actually makes more sense for normal daily use. So hit like if you want that breakdown, and subscribe if you want foldable news without the fluff. And comment one thing: would you rather carry a thicker phone that opens to 10 inches or a normal phone that expands to around 7 inches?
Community call time: be honest in the comments. Is the TriFold the future of phones, or is it just a cool engineering stunt that’ll never be practical? The most interesting part isn’t the device… It’s what Samsung does next when the pressure is on.
See you in the next one.

Looks modern but still kinda new—curious to see how this grows over time
“This TriFold design is amazing!”
The TriFold 2 sounds like a bold step forward, especially with a thinner and lighter design making foldables more practical.
If Samsung nails durability and performance, this could truly redefine the future of smartphones.
Original TriFold selling out instantly with zero restocks proves massive demand exists. Samsung needs to produce way more units this time!
I’m more interested in the slidable OLED idea than another foldable experiment. A normal-sized phone that expands when needed just sounds way more practical.
Hou much does this Samsung cost?
