Discover Apple’s innovative foldable design set to transform smartphones.
It appears like the era of all iPhones being flat, rectangular devices is quickly coming to an end. There is a growing amount of speculation that Apple will release its first foldable phone in the latter months of 2026.
According to a recent source, the corporation is also developing a clamshell flip.
The clamshell model, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, who is renowned for his accuracy on Apple scoops, would be more square in shape and smaller than the book-style foldable that the company is allegedly working on.
However, Gurman cautions that “the product is far from guaranteed to reach the market,” so don’t get too enthusiastic just yet. If the foldable proves to be successful, the clamshell may follow shortly after.
A clamshell phone is essentially a flip phone with a hinge in the middle that folds toward you like a clam. A clamshell offers a more compact form for maximum portability, while other foldable phones expand up to nearly the size of a tablet.
Some may recall the well-known flip phone Motorola StarTAC from the 1990s, before foldable screens were commonplace.
A request for comment was not immediately answered by an Apple official.
“Apple is betting that its first foldable iPhone will be successful enough to generate real demand for the category and that customers will want additional shapes and sizes, much as they have with traditional slab-style iPhones,” Gurman wrote.
With the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max accounting for almost half of all iPhone sales in December, Apple had a successful year. Additionally, the business announced record-breaking iPhone sales for the year.
However, we points out, a company that lags behind its competitors in the foldables market is running out of time.
Although Apple has not formally disclosed a name, specifications, or release date, the majority of leaks and rumors suggest a late 2026 launch. However, rumors about an iPhone that folds have been around for years.
Apple will need to set itself apart from Samsung and Motorola, who already have square-shaped clamshells with the Samsung Z Fold 7 and Motorola Razr, respectively, if it is developing a smaller clamshell foldable.
There are enthusiasts of the phone style.
Over 5.7 million people subscribe to Austin Evans’ YouTube channel, where he tests out various new gadgets and technologies. According to Evans, an iPhone clamshell “would be so cool.”
“I’ve been a big fan of the flip form factor ever since Samsung first launched the Z Flip back in 2020,” Evans told me.
“I think it’s the progression of the ‘regular’ smartphone in a lot of respects. The flip form factor makes your phone much more portable, but the fold form factor is a terrific way to make your gadget into a tiny tablet.
“I truly adore this idea; you do get additional advantages like a phone that can stand alone and an external display that prevents you from doomscrolling as easily as a regular device. Although I enjoy the Fold, my heart belongs to the Flip.
In his analysis, Gurman also conjectured that Apple would someday produce a larger folding phone in the shape of a book.
According to reports, its initial foldable would have a 5.5-inch screen, which is less than Samsung’s 6.5-inch model.
When folded, the gadget may be bigger and shorter than a typical iPhone, giving it a squarer footprint that better fits the inside display’s aspect ratio, according to CAD leaks and purported case-maker molds.
The iPhone Air’s remarkably thin chassis has been widely interpreted as a glimpse of what one half of a future foldable iPhone would look like, according to several publications.
The Fold’s purported dimensions might be explained if that theory is correct.
Depending on the final hinge design and internal layering, the thickness should be somewhat over 9 to 11 mm when folded and between approximately 4.5 and 5.6 mm when unfurled, placing it in the same range as the iPhone Air.
The crease question and the display
Perhaps the most difficult aspect of any foldable phone is the display, which Apple seems to have spent years perfecting.
According to several sources, Apple’s main supplier will be Samsung Display. According to multiple sources, including Bloomberg, Samsung unveiled a new crease-less foldable OLED panel at CES 2026 that may be the same technology Apple intends to employ.
These studies claim that the panel disperses stress while folding by combining a flexible OLED with a metal support plate that has been laser-drilled.
According to reports, Apple believes that a display with an almost undetectable wrinkle is necessary before joining the foldable market.
This panel would be a significant advance over the current foldables, which still exhibit noticeable creasing in some lighting situations, if Apple decides to employ it.
Biometrics and cameras
1. According to camera speculations, Apple is considering a four-camera configuration. That could consist of:
2. Two rear cameras, reportedly 48MP main and ultra-wide
3. The external display has a single punch-hole camera.
4. The inner screen has a single under-display camera.
According to a number of sources, Apple will not use Face ID at all on the iPhone Fold. Instead, like the most current iPad models, it is anticipated to rely on Touch ID integrated into the power button.
Apple would be able to avoid Dynamic Island cuts and notches on both displays as a result.
