Additionally, it should give users more control over depth of field, or how sharply a topic looks in the front relative to the background.
The assertion supports with earlier reports that the 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max will have an improved primary camera with a customizable aperture.
Ming-Chi Kuo, an Apple supply chain expert, was the first to predict that the primary rear camera on both 18 Pro models would have a variable aperture in December 2024.
According to a more recent report from October 2025, Apple was negotiating components with suppliers and moving forward with plans to incorporate the technology into next-generation iPhones.
A variable aperture has never been employed by Apple on an iPhone camera. All of the 14 Pro through the 17 Pro models’ primary cameras have a fixed aperture of ¾/1.78, and the lens is always fully open and taking pictures with this aperture.
In 2018 and 2019, Samsung Electronics added a variable aperture camera to its Galaxy S9 and S10 models; however, the function was removed in 2020 because of the increased thickness and expensive cost.
Second, the leaker restated their assertion that Apple is testing a new telephoto camera for the 18 Pro that has a bigger aperture. The telephoto camera on the iPhone 17 Pro variants has an aperture of ¾/2.8.
The camera had the same aperture size even though it was upgraded to a 48-megapixel sensor, which was a significant advance over the 12-megapixel sensor used on earlier models.
Light gathering, noise reduction, shutter speed, and backdrop separation would all be enhanced with a wider aperture on the iPhone’s telephoto camera.
According to additional reports, the 18 Pro versions may also get a 24-megapixel front-facing camera and a teleconverter to enhance zoom reach and effective focal length.
