Key Features and Color Options of the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max
Aside from the first iPhone Fold, this year will see only two standard new iPhone models for the first time: the iPhone 18 Pro and the iPhone 18 Pro Max. The new features of the iPhone 17 Pro successors already look to be fixed in stone and are elegantly portrayed in a recent render clip.
iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max debut with confirmed upgrades, showcased in recent renders, alongside the new iPhone Fold.
In recent days, leakers and analysts have found quite a few specs and facts about the improvements Apple is making for September 2026. For the first time, there will be a definite difference between Pro iPhones and the iPhone Fold and normal iPhone 18 models in 2027. Anyone wishing for a new iPhone 18 in 2026 will likely have to go for either the more costly iPhone 18 Pro variants or the potentially even more expensive iPhone Fold.
While Apple will most likely use Touch ID and a punch-hole FaceTime camera in both displays of the iPhone Fold, Apple will install the punch-hole display design familiar from Android phones in the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max by concealing the Face ID sensors invisibly beneath the display, as recently confirmed by prototypes. The Dynamic Island will remain but will be hidden in the much smaller display cutout on the left side, as the renders below indicate.

The render movie depicts the iPhone 18 Pro (Max) in three different colors.
The color options for the iPhone 18 Pro are not yet finalized. According to FPT host John Prosser, Apple is testing at least three new color possibilities, with brown and a purple tint planned in addition to burgundy red. This is consistent with earlier speculations, and Apple may ultimately settle on one of these three new hues.
Other expected developments in the iPhone 18 Pro (Max)
The video also showcases various additional enhancements promised in the next generation of iPhones. For example, Apple’s first 2 nm chipset, probably dubbed the Apple A20, is planned to power the successors to the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max, along with a new Apple C2 modem that would replace the Qualcomm modems used to date.
High-ranking analysts also forecast Apple will enable 5G via satellite in addition to the previously accessible satellite SOS capabilities, but this has not yet been properly verified. The same applies to the variable aperture of the main camera, which is intended to appeal to ambitious photographers.
In case you’re not up to date on your rumblings surrounding iPhone release schedules, 2026 is likely to herald in a new strategy for Apple when it comes to launching newer phones. In the past, Apple has shown off all its flagships all at once, with merely the lower-end iPhone SE/iPhone E series smartphones emerging separately. Under the new method, first reported by The Information last May, Apple would isolate the iPhone Pro release from the normal iPhone.

In practical terms, this would mean that Apple’s fall 2026 iPhone launch would only comprise the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. (There’s also talk of an iPhone Fold attending that launch party, but let’s just focus on the major flagships here.) Meanwhile, the iPhone 18 would cool its heels until the following spring, when it would definitely debut alongside an iPhone 18e.
To put it another way, if reports about Apple’s developing approach are true, the only lower-end iPhone we’re going to see this year is a reported iPhone 17e release, due to debut sometime in the first part of the year. From then on, it’s nothing but Pro models, at least until 2027.
Apple is apparently moving in this manner to stir up phone sales. By staggering the launches in this way, it would tempt more people to pony up for the more expensive Pro models—or so the logic goes.
The risk, of course, is that Apple ends up alienating budget-minded buyers. Not everyone wants to spend $1,099 or more on a phone, and that’s the lowest price you can pay for an iPhone Pro model these days, after the iPhone 17 Pro got a hike to its base price last fall. What about those of us who prefer that the cost of our next device remain in the triple digits?
I agree that this was my original line of reasoning when stories about Apple’s new approach to iPhone first appeared. But as I’ve had time to check it over and see the iPhone 18 Pro theories that have arisen, I’m beginning to think the move could pay off—not only for Apple, but for iPhone customers, too.
Is the iPhone 18 to gain from the trickle-down effect?
Any move to spread out the iPhone launch to Pro and non-Pro windows pretty much supports what everybody already knows—the iPhone Pro models are likely to receive first dibs at the primo features, which then trickle down to the conventional iPhone. That’s likely not going to alter regardless of how Apple chooses to deliver the iPhone 18 series, but splitting out those rollouts could boost the pace at which the entry-level device gets more expensive features.
We’ve seen in the last two iPhone releases that the base model has been reducing the gap with its Pro equivalents. For example, the iPhone 16 took up existing Pro features like the Action button and enhanced macro photography capabilities. The iPhone 17 took an even bigger leap ahead, finally offering a fast-refreshing display, along with a 48MP ultrawide camera and 256GB of storage in the base model.
This video explains everything.
