This is why I don’t think the iPhone 18 Pro will fix the RAM problem by adding more storage.

iPhone; I don’t believe a little increase in storage would make up for a price hike.

A lot of tech aficionados are worried about how the current RAM crisis will affect the pricing of the iPhone 18 and iPhone 18 Pro, which are set to come out in September.

Apple sells millions of iPhones every year; thus, it’s the most important product in its portfolio. Tim Cook has to determine whether to raise the prices of other items to maintain the iPhone’s pricing low enough that people will still want to buy it.

Or does he raise the price of Apple’s most significant product because he thinks the iPhone is so crucial to most people and wants to keep the company’s profits?

You may also raise the price of the iPhone 18 Pro series without making it seem like you are doing so. How? By moving the goalposts.

Apple decided not to update the iPhone 16 Pro’s 128GB of basic storage with a similar iPhone 17 Pro model in 2025. The 256GB iPhone 17 Pro costs an extra $100, making it the sole choice for those wishing to upgrade to an iPhone Pro at the lowest cost.

It’s quite a brilliant move. The logic board of an iPhone is coupled to the NAND memory chips that give internal storage.

Apple may raise pricing, save money, and maybe give the “benefit” of greater storage in return, as the cost of these CPUs is less than the increase it passes on to the consumer.

It’s a forced upgrade, of course, and the new point of entry has boosted revenue per phone without necessitating the development of any new features.

In an investor letter reviewed by the Wall Street Journal, Craig Moffett, an analyst at Moffett Nathanson, suggested that Apple will use the identical method this year to boost the base storage of the iPhone 18 Pro.

However, I don’t think that’s Apple’s plan, and here’s why.

I refuse to buy it.

Though I don’t think Apple is ready to commit to it just yet, it’s a fascinating thought. These are the current prices for the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max variants, along with the storage choices that go with them.

The basic configuration for each model would need to be 512GB if Apple wants to leverage storage as a tool to boost expenses. Customers of the iPhone 18 Pro Max would presumably have to give up one choice and add a 2TB option to the basic iPhone 18 Pro options.

When it comes to anticipating Apple’s business practices, expert Ming Chi-Kuo has a great track record, and he doesn’t anticipate the corporation will hike prices this September.

Kuo argues that although Apple would have to shoulder the extra expenditures, it would take advantage of the “market chaos” to recruit more users.

According to Apple’s history, the last time the business abolished a storage option was in 2021, when it replaced 64GB as the basic storage size with 128GB.

Prior to that, Apple dropped 32GB as the minimum storage space on the iPhone in 2017 with the iPhone X.

One corporation that has earned a reputation for taking the long view is Apple. I would be amazed if Apple employed storage as a mechanism to hike the price twice in a row after two sequential instances of waiting four years between increases.

The projected release date of the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max in India

Apple’s first foldable iPhone and the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are purportedly set to be introduced during the second week of the company’s annual September event in 2026. Pre-orders for the product are normally available globally within a week after launch, and sales in India commence shortly after.

According to insiders, Apple has postponed the sale of the basic iPhone 18 until 2027 due to a combination of tighter supply chain conditions and increased memory chip costs.

Apple is apparently finding less flexibility in sourcing crucial components at scale as memory makers prioritize demand from AI data centers.

Additionally, it is believed that the company is readjusting its launch strategy, deciding to spread out the release of its usual range in favor of higher-margin Pro models and unique form factors, including the foldable iPhone. Early in 2027, the 18e will be offered alongside the standard model.
